I remember the first Middleham Stables Open Day, which took place when I was a lad, at some time in the 1990s. On a somewhat wind-swept afternoon, Channel 4 Racing’s Derek Thompson fell off the back of a flat trailer, I seem to recall, and a few ponies were schooled over some fences at the lowlands between Pinker’s Pond and the river Cover.
These days, the Middleham Stables’ Open Day has become the Middleham Stables Annual Open Event 2012, and it will see thousands of visitors flocking to see stars like Joe Fanning, Richie McGrath and Silvestre de Sousa on the Low Moor.
There will also be a question and answer session with some of the sport’s biggest names: George Duffield, Patrick Haslam, and Mark Johnston.
The West of Yore Hunt and Hounds will also be delighting crowds by making an appearance.
Trainers from Middleham (and the surrounding towns and villages) will be opening their gates from 09:30am until 13:00pm, when the afternoon’s festivities will begin on the Low Moor side of Middleham.
Free buses will be provided form Leyburn (take advantage of these as traffic and parking are difficult on the day!).
Trainers to be featured in the day from Middleham and the surrounding area include: James Bethell, Mrs K Burke, Mrs Ann Duffield (at Sharp Hill farm, near Constable Burton, Leyburn) – Mrs Duffield will be accompanied by Ferdy Murphy of West Witton, and some of his stable stars. Also open for the day will be Andy Crook, Chris Fairhurst, Micky Hammond, Ben Haslam, Mark Johnston, George Moore, Jedd O’Keefe, Kate Walton, Simon West, John Weymes and Jason Ward.
Admission to the day costs £7 per adult (accompanied children are free).
