DNS
DNS is short for Domain Name System.
In short, this is how computers know where to look for domain name related information.
There are many types of DNS records, for example A records (which can point a browser to a web server) MX records (which explain where mail servers are for a domain name) and TXT records (which issue other directions for a host name).
The records for domain.com may be different from subdomain.domain.com.
