Authorize.net is an online payment service provider – or payment gateway – which can be used for a variety of online store softwares and checkouts.
Authorize.net is based in the USA and is often selected as a gateway owing to the fact that as well as credit cards, they also accept electronic check payments too, offering a slightly wider range of options.
Authorize.net and WooCommerce
With WooCommerce, Authorize.net allows payments to be first “authorized” before later charging the payment (for example before shipment) making it good for things like pre-orders too.
Founded in Utah, USA, in 1996 by Jeff Knowles, Authorize.net is aimed at small to medium sized businesses. Since being acquired by a company ultimately owned by Visa Inc. Authorize.net has steadily grown to around 450,000 customers.
Authorize.net processes card payments and ACH payments, as well as offering a range of fraud protection services. They allow recurring billing for subscription payments, and hosted payment services too, although access via the API allows customers to process card payments in their own websites, too.
The virtual terminal offered by Authorize.net allows customers to process card payments over the phone.
Albeit losing some ground to new players, like Braintree and Stripe, and lacking the ubiquity of players like PayPal, ApplePay, Chrome Pay and Amazon Payments, Authorize.net still commands a large and loyal customer base.
