VAT

VAT is an abbreviation for Value Added Tax which applies in the United Kingdom (UK) and across most of the European Union (EU).

Online retailers selling to customers from the UK need to charge and report VAT even if they are outside of the EU.

As a consequence, there are several tools we work with, at Silicon Dales, which deal with the application of VAT to consumers from the UK.

This is further complicated by the fact that some UK companies are VAT registered, and therefore do not need to pay VAT on purchases made “cross border” (which is reverse charged).

We are neither accountants nor practicing solicitors, but we have a good idea of the mechanisms involved to stay on top of your online obligations when it comes to managing VAT for UK customers with your web store.
